On 28 April 2026, the European Federation of Geologists (EFG), through the EFG Academy’s Expert Exchange programme, is hosting a live online session titled ’Responsible Mining and Transparent Supply Chains in CRM Mining’.

The mining sector, particularly artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM), faces significant challenges related to transparency, traceability, and responsible sourcing. Due to lack of regulation, limited market access, and high compliance costs, ASM operations often remain in the informal or illegal sector, increasing the risk of environmental damage, unsafe working conditions, and human rights violations. This session introduces practical approaches to navigating these challenges from the very start of a project.

WHAT WE WILL COVER:

  • Standard procedures, geoethics and related topics when starting exploration and mining projects

  • Key issues when entering a new field, region or area and how to mitigate or avoid them

  • The social licence to operate: what it is and why it is essential

  • Transparency, traceability, and responsible sourcing in artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM)

  • Practical tools to interact with communities and mitigate problems

  • Geoethics and its role in responsible mining practices

SPEAKER:

Christian Masurenko

Experienced economic geologist with over 25 years of expertise in responsible mining, social development, and project management across diverse commodities and environments. Chris has a proven track record in leading large-scale exploration and mining projects, with a focus on environmental protection, geo-ethics, and community engagement. He is a strong advocate for sustainable mining practices, with significant experience in advising governments and international organisations on good governance and natural resource management. He has experience in tutoring geology and mining engineering students in mineralogy (TU Clausthal; TU Bergakademie Freiberg), leading workshops on economic and risk factors in mining at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), and training local engineers and geologists in Ghana, Liberia and Brazil.

Young professionals in exploration and mining, geologists and engineers working in junior exploration companies.
